Wet Mattress? How to Dry It Properly Before Mold Sets In

Spilled water, a roof leak or a dripping air conditioner? What to do in the first 24 hours, how to dry each type of mattress and when it can't be saved.

Can a Wet Mattress Be Saved?

A wet mattress can usually be saved if you dry it properly within the first 24 hours and the water was clean. What matters isn't the damp patch on top but how much water reached the core. The longer water sits inside, especially in a closed bedroom during Ho Chi Minh City's rainy season, the higher the risk of odor and mold.

This guide covers water incidents: spills, roof leaks and dripping air conditioners. If your mattress already has mold spots, see whether a moldy mattress can be cleaned. If the liquid was a child's urine, see child urine on a mattress.

How Mattresses Get Soaked: Three Common Incidents

Each source brings a different amount of water and a different level of contamination, so the response differs too. Start by working out where the water came from.

IncidentTypical Wet AreaType of WaterWatch Out For
Spilled glass or bottleA small patch on topClean (if it was plain water)Soda, milk or tea leave sugar and residue that need cleaning
Roof leak or rain through a windowA corner or edge, sometimes the undersideRainwater with dust and grime from the roof or wallOften found late; check the bed base and wall too
Dripping air conditionerHead end or the edge against the wallCondensation mixed with dirt from inside the unitDrips for a long time, so water goes deep even if the top mark is small

A dripping air conditioner is the easiest problem to miss: only a few drops a night, but for days on end. If you find a damp patch at the head of the bed near the wall, check the AC before drying the mattress, or it will just get wet again.

The First 24 Hours: What to Do First

In the first 24 hours, the goal is to get as much water out as quickly as possible, before it spreads through the core.

Step 1: Stop the Source and Lift the Mattress

Switch off the dripping AC, close the window or catch the leak. Then lift the mattress off the wet bed base or floor. A mattress sitting on a wet surface keeps drawing water up from below.

Step 2: Strip the Bedding and Blot

Remove the sheets, protector and mattress cover (if it comes off) and wash them separately. Press thick, dry towels firmly onto the wet area, swap for fresh ones and repeat until they barely pick up any water. Press, don't rub, since rubbing spreads the water further.

Step 3: Stand It Up and Get Air Moving

Stand the mattress on its side or prop it up so both faces get air. Open the windows and aim a fan straight at the wet area. If it's raining, close up and run the AC on Dry mode, or a dehumidifier if you have one. For heavily soaked mattresses, a wet/dry vacuum used directly on the damp area pulls out far more water than towels alone.

Step 4: Check the Underside and Bed Base

Water tends to run down and collect on the underside, where you can't see it. Check the bottom of the mattress and dry the wooden slats or platform before putting it back, since damp wood also holds moisture for a long time.

Important

Don't make the bed and sleep on it while the core is still damp, and don't wrap it in plastic to "keep it clean." Body heat plus trapped moisture is exactly what odor and mold need.

How to Dry a Wet Mattress by Type

With the same amount of water, each mattress type holds it in different places and tolerates different drying methods. The table sums it up, with details below.

Mattress TypeWhere Water SitsDoAvoid
InnerspringTop comfort layers and the baseStand it on its side, fan both facesLeaving it on a damp floor for days
Natural latexInside the core's ventilation holesBlot, then dry in an airy, shaded spotWringing, folding hard or strong direct sun
Foam, memory foamDeep in the foam, like a spongeExtract with a machine, keep fans runningSqueezing hard or soaking it to "wash it while you're at it"
Compressed fiberThroughout the wet section of fiberDry early and evenly, check it stays flatLeaving it wet so the fiber clumps and sags

Innerspring Mattresses

An innerspring mattress has plenty of open space inside, so air moves fairly well, but water runs down and pools in the base layer. Stand it on its side to let water out and fan both faces. If it has been soaked several times, the springs may rust and squeak, which drying can't fix.

Natural Latex Mattresses

A latex core is full of ventilation holes, and water trapped in them takes a long time to escape. Blot thoroughly, then leave the mattress in an airy, shaded spot. Don't fold or wring it, because wet latex tears easily. For general latex care, see whether a latex mattress can be cleaned.

Foam and Memory Foam Mattresses

Foam soaks up water like a sponge and holds it deep inside, which makes it the hardest type to dry after a heavy soaking. Extract with a wet/dry vacuum first and keep fans running; pressing hard can break down the foam structure. Why foam shouldn't be wet-washed is explained in can a memory foam mattress be cleaned.

Compressed Fiber Mattresses

Compressed fiber mattresses are light and easy to stand up in front of a fan, but fiber left wet for long clumps and sags unevenly. Dry it as early as possible, then press on several spots across the top. Any area that sinks noticeably means the fiber inside has deformed.

To check whether the core is truly dry, use the tests in our guide to how long a mattress takes to dry.

When Is a Wet Mattress Beyond Saving?

Not every soaked mattress is worth keeping. Thuan High Clean usually suggests considering a replacement in any of these cases:

  • ✓It was soaked by dirty water, such as street flooding or sewage backing up into the house.
  • ✓It stayed wet for several days and now smells musty from inside, even if the surface looks clean.
  • ✓Mold spots appear on the underside too, or have spread across several areas.
  • ✓The springs have rusted, the foam is crumbling or the fiber has clumped, leaving dips in the surface.
  • ✓It keeps getting wet in the same spot and the water source still hasn't been fixed.

If you're torn between cleaning and replacing, our guide on whether to clean your mattress or buy a new one gives clear criteria. You can also send photos on WhatsApp or Zalo at +84 357 111 566 and Thuan High Clean will tell you honestly whether it's worth cleaning.

Cleaning After Water Damage: What a Professional Service Can Do

When a mattress has been soaked by rain or AC water, or already shows water rings, drying alone leaves stains and grime in the core. Thuan High Clean's in-home mattress cleaning cleans the mattress and extracts the dirty water right in your bedroom, and it usually dries in about 1–2 hours. In most cases this noticeably reduces water rings and musty smells, but we can't promise results on mattresses with deep mold or a damaged core.

Preventing the Next Soaking

  • ✓Service the air conditioner and check its drain line regularly, especially before the rainy season.
  • ✓Don't put the head of the bed directly under the indoor AC unit or against a window that lets rain in.
  • ✓Use a waterproof mattress protector, especially on foam and latex mattresses.
  • ✓When you're away during the rainy season, close the bedroom windows and ask someone to check if the roof tends to leak.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no fixed timeline, since it depends on how much water, the mattress type and the humidity in the room. In a closed, humid bedroom during the rainy season, a wet mattress can start to smell within a few days. That's why it's best to dry it on day one rather than wait and see.
You don't need to fan the whole thing, but check a wider area than the visible mark. Water usually spreads further inside the core and on the underside than on the surface. Press around the spot and check underneath before deciding it's just one corner.
No. A standard dry vacuum isn't built to pick up water and could be damaged or become an electrical hazard. Only use a wet/dry vacuum that clearly states it handles liquids; otherwise, blotting with towels and running a fan is the safe option.
It's worth cleaning if there are water rings, a damp smell, or if the leak carried dirt from the roof. When water evaporates, the grime stays in the core and often turns into stains. If it's fully dry with no smell or marks, you can simply keep an eye on it for a few more days.
