Can a Memory Foam Mattress Be Cleaned? What to Avoid

Memory foam can't be soaked or machine washed. Learn why foam hates water and heat, how to clean it safely at home and the mistakes to avoid.

Can You Wash a Memory Foam Mattress?

Yes, it can be cleaned, but it can't be washed like laundry. A zippered cover can usually go in the machine according to its care label. The foam core itself, memory foam included, should never be soaked, machine washed, heat-dried or left in strong sun. The safe options are vacuuming, spot cleaning with suds and very little moisture, or professional low-moisture extraction.

Foam is porous. It soaks up water like a giant sponge and releases it very slowly. Memory foam is also heat-sensitive, softening as it warms and firming up as it cools. That makes water and heat the two things to avoid most when you clean it.

In our guide to cleaning a natural latex mattress, we covered how to care for latex. This article focuses on what's different about foam: why it hates water and heat, what to avoid, how to clean it safely and when to call a professional.

Quick Summary

  • Do: wash the cover per its label, vacuum regularly, dab stains with suds and press dry towels on top to draw moisture out.
  • Don't: soak, spray, machine wash, wring, heat-dry, sun-dry or steam the foam core.
  • A big spill, a urine smell or possible mold inside: professional extraction is the safer choice.

How Is Foam Different From Latex When Cleaning?

Many people assume foam and latex mattresses are cleaned the same way because they feel similar. In reality they react differently to water and heat, so the approach needs to differ too:

FeatureFoam and Memory FoamNatural Latex
StructureSynthetic foam with tiny cellsRubber tree sap with ventilation holes
With waterAbsorbs it like a sponge, holds it a long timeSeeps in through the holes, dries slowly
With heatMemory foam softens and can deformAges faster, yellows, turns brittle
When wetVery heavy, tears and dents easilyVery heavy, tears easily
LayersOften several foam layers glued togetherUsually a single latex block

If you have a latex mattress, follow the separate steps in our latex mattress cleaning guide. Everything below applies to foam, memory foam and layered foam mattresses.

Why You Shouldn't Soak or Wet-Wash Foam

Foam Soaks Up Water and Holds It

A thick foam layer can take in a lot of water in seconds. The surface may feel dry after a few hours, while the inside stays damp much longer. You can't tell whether it's truly dry just by touching the top.

Memory Foam Reacts to Heat

Memory foam is designed to soften with body heat. Steam, hair dryers, irons or strong sun can deform it in spots, roughen the surface or reduce its bounce. Direct sunlight also makes foam yellow faster.

Trapped Moisture Leads to Odors and Mold

Ho Chi Minh City's heat and humidity, especially in the rainy season or in apartment bedrooms with little airflow, slow drying even more. Moisture that lingers inside the foam can cause sour, musty smells and hidden mold. If you already see mold spots, read can a moldy mattress be cleaned.

Wet Foam Is Heavy and Tears Easily

Wet foam gets much heavier and weaker. Pulling it by a corner, folding it or wringing it out can tear the foam or separate the glued layers. That kind of damage usually can't be repaired.

What to Avoid When Cleaning a Foam Mattress

These are the mistakes our technicians see most often when people clean foam mattresses themselves. Most come from habits that work for cotton mattresses or clothing.

Machine Washing or Soaking the Core

A washing machine's spin can tear foam apart, and soaking leaves the core so saturated it's almost impossible to dry fully at home. Only a zippered cover belongs in the machine, following its label.

Spraying It Wet and Scrubbing Hard

Spraying too much solution drives water deep and spreads the stain into a ring. A stiff brush can fray the cover fabric and tear the thin foam layer underneath. Dab gently with a cloth instead of scrubbing.

Using Steam, a Hair Dryer or Strong Sun

These are common ways to speed up drying or "sanitize," but they're the worst for memory foam. Heat deforms the foam, and steam pushes even more moisture into the core. Fans and natural airflow are much safer.

Using Bleach, Hydrogen Peroxide or Solvents

Strong bleach and solvents such as gasoline or concentrated alcohol can make foam crumbly, discolor it and leave a lingering smell. Stick to diluted dish soap or a pH-neutral cleaner, and test a hidden corner first.

Putting the Cover and Sheets Back Too Soon

A closed cover traps moisture in the core, and the mattress can start to smell within days. Wait until it no longer feels cool or damp anywhere, including the underside, before you zip the cover back on and make the bed.

How to Clean a Foam Mattress Safely at Home

These steps work for routine upkeep and small, fresh stains. The rule throughout: as little moisture as possible, and no heat.

Step 1: Vacuum and Deodorize Dry

Strip the bed and wash the cover per its label if it comes off. Vacuum both sides with a soft brush attachment without pressing hard. If there's a mild odor, sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda, leave it a few hours, then vacuum it up.

Step 2: Dab With Suds, Then Press Dry Towels On Top

Mix a few drops of dish soap into cool water and whip up some suds. Dab only the suds onto the stain, working from the outside in. Then lay a dry towel on top and press firmly to draw moisture out, repeating until the towel barely gets damp. With foam, pressing works better than wiping, because the water sits inside, not just on the surface.

Step 3: Dry With a Fan in an Airy Room

Open the windows and run a fan or your air conditioner's dry mode. Raise the mattress on a slatted base so the underside gets air. Don't stand a foam mattress on its edge for long, since soft foam can sag out of shape.

A Whole Glass of Water or a Bedwetting Accident

Blot right away with several towels, pressing hard without rubbing. If the liquid has gone through the cover into the foam, home methods usually can't pull all the moisture and odor out, so book an extraction cleaning as soon as you can. When to Call a Professional

DIY cleaning is fine for upkeep and small marks. It's time to call a professional if any of these apply:

  • ✓Water, urine or a drink has gone through the cover into the foam
  • ✓The mattress smells of urine, sourness or mildew even after dry deodorizing
  • ✓You see black or green spots that may be mold
  • ✓Stains are still clearly visible after 2–3 DIY attempts
  • ✓The cover is sewn on and can't be removed for washing
  • ✓The mattress hasn't had a deep clean in more than a year

How Thuan High Clean Handles Foam Mattresses

When we arrive, our technician checks the label, the type of foam and the mattress's condition before starting. We vacuum, pre-treat stains with a pH-neutral solution, then use an extraction machine on a low-moisture setting to pull dirt out without soaking the foam. We don't use steam on memory foam, and we'll show you how to let the mattress finish drying afterward.

We're also upfront about the limits: stains and odors usually improve noticeably, but foam that has yellowed with age, sagged or started to crumble can't be restored by cleaning. Mattress cleaning at home costs 300,000 VND for mattresses under 1.0 m wide, 350,000 VND for 1.2–1.4 m, 400,000 VND for 1.6–1.8 m and 450,000–500,000 VND for 2.0–2.2 m. The final price depends on the material and its condition; send photos on WhatsApp or Zalo at +84 357 111 566 for an accurate quote before we start. FAQs About Cleaning Foam Mattresses

Not necessarily, if you act quickly. Blot it right away, pressing towels firmly to draw out water, then dry it with a fan. If the water soaked deep into the core or it starts to smell, book an extraction cleaning to prevent mold inside.
Yes. A handheld vacuum with a soft brush is the safest way to keep memory foam clean between deep cleans. Just avoid pressing the nozzle hard into the surface.
A zippered cover can usually go in the machine, but follow its label: cold water, gentle cycle and no hot dryer. If the cover is sewn to the foam, only clean the surface; don't try to remove it.
No need. The smell of a new foam mattress usually fades within a few days if you keep the room ventilated. If it lasts unusually long, contact the seller for advice.
Vacuum it monthly and book a deep clean every 6–12 months. If you have young kids or pets, every 3–6 months is better.
