What to Do When Your Child Wets the Bed
When your child wets the bed, the most important thing is to blot up as much urine as you can, right away, before it soaks deeper. Then dab on diluted white vinegar to neutralize the odor, blot again, and sprinkle baking soda once the mattress is nearly dry before vacuuming it up. Don't scrub, don't use hot water or heat, and don't spray perfume to cover the smell.
Acting in the first few minutes usually keeps a stain and urine smell from setting in. If it sits overnight or happens again and again in the same spot, urine reaches the mattress core, leaving a yellow mark and a smell that returns whenever the weather turns humid.
Our article on whether a yellow-stained mattress can be cleaned mentions urine as one cause of yellowing. This one walks you through exactly what to do right after an accident, how to get rid of the urine smell and what to watch for with each type of mattress.
Quick Summary
- Strip the sheets, pillowcases and blanket for washing, and move your child to a dry spot.
- Blot with dry towels, pressing hard, without rubbing.
- Dab a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and cool water, then blot dry again.
- Sprinkle baking soda once the mattress is nearly dry, leave a few hours, then vacuum.
- Dry with a fan and only remake the bed once it's completely dry.
Why Does Urine on a Mattress Smell Worse Over Time?
Fresh urine from a young child usually doesn't smell strong. The sharp ammonia smell comes later, as the urine sits in the mattress. When our technicians inspect mattresses with repeated accidents, they usually find three problems.
Bacteria Turn Urine Into an Ammonia Smell
Urine contains urea. Left in a warm, damp mattress, bacteria break the urea down into ammonia, which is the sharp smell you notice. Ho Chi Minh City's heat and humidity speed this up.
Dried Residue Leaves Yellow Rings and Re-Releases Odor
As the water evaporates, urine residue stays in the fabric and core, drying into a yellow mark with a darker edge. The smell fades when the mattress is dry, but on rainy or humid days the residue absorbs moisture and the odor comes back. That's why many parents notice the mattress smells "some days but not others."
Urine Soaks Into the Core, Out of Reach
One accident can soak through the sheet and cover into the padding, foam or latex below. Wiping the top only reaches the surface. If it keeps happening in the same spot, residue builds up in the core and is very hard to remove with home methods.
How to Clean Urine From a Mattress Right Away
You'll need a few absorbent dry towels, a spray bottle or small bowl, white vinegar, baking soda and a vacuum. These steps work for most mattresses; notes for specific mattress types follow in the next section.
Step 1: Strip the Bed and Move Your Child
Change your child and settle them somewhere dry. Strip the sheet, pillowcases, blanket and the mattress cover if it comes off, and wash them right away according to their labels. Bedding left sitting will also start to smell and stain.
Step 2: Blot Hard, Don't Rub
Lay a dry towel over the wet area and press down hard with your palms. You can even kneel on the towel to squeeze more out. Switch to a dry towel and repeat until it barely picks up moisture. Rubbing only spreads the urine and pushes it deeper.
Step 3: Dab Diluted White Vinegar
Mix white vinegar and cool water 1:1. Mist or dab it onto the area, a little wider than the wet patch, without soaking it. Wait a few minutes, then blot with a dry towel. Vinegar helps neutralize urine odor, and its own smell fades as the mattress dries. Test a hidden corner first if the cover is colored.
Step 4: Sprinkle Baking Soda, Then Vacuum
Once the mattress is just slightly damp, cover the area with a layer of baking soda. It absorbs leftover moisture and odor. Leave it at least a few hours, ideally overnight if your child can sleep elsewhere, then vacuum it up thoroughly.
Step 5: Dry Completely Before Remaking the Bed
Open the windows and point a fan at the area, or run your air conditioner's dry mode. Check both the top and underside of the mattress, and only make the bed and let your child sleep there once it no longer feels cool or damp. Covering it too soon traps moisture, and the smell is likely to return.
Don't Do This
- Don't use hot water, steam, a hair dryer or an iron: heat sets urine stains and odor.
- Don't use bleach on a mattress, and never mix bleach with vinegar, as it can release toxic gas.
- Don't spray perfume or air freshener to hide the smell; it only masks it while the residue stays in the mattress.
- Keep your child away from the treated area until it's dry and the baking soda has been vacuumed up.
Notes for Latex, Foam and Spring Mattresses
Each type of mattress reacts to liquid differently, so the way you handle urine needs to change too:
| Mattress Type | What Happens | Key Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Natural latex | Urine runs through the ventilation holes into the core | Press out as much as possible, use little solution, no direct sun |
| Foam, memory foam | Absorbs liquid like a sponge and stays damp a long time | Focus on pressing towels to draw moisture out; no heat |
| Spring (innerspring) | Soaks through the padding and foam above the springs | Dry thoroughly to prevent odor and rusty springs |
| Compressed cotton | The cotton holds odor and yellows easily | Blot fast and dry the underside thoroughly |
Latex: No Soaking, No Direct Sun
Urine follows the ventilation holes deep into the latex, so you'll need to press with towels more times than on other mattresses. Use just enough diluted vinegar and dry it with a fan out of the sun. Direct sunlight makes latex age faster and turn brittle. For more on caring for latex, see can a latex mattress be cleaned.
Foam and Memory Foam: As Little Moisture as Possible
Foam soaks up urine quickly and releases moisture very slowly. Press dry towels down hard several times, apply diluted vinegar only with a cloth rather than spraying, and never use steam or a hair dryer. If the urine has gone through the cover into the foam core, home methods usually can't pull all the moisture and smell out. See can a memory foam mattress be cleaned for more.
Spring and Cotton Mattresses: Dry the Underside Too
Both have cotton or foam padding that holds onto odor. After treating the spot, prop the mattress on its side or raise it on a slatted base, if you can, so the underside gets air. A spring mattress that stays damp can develop rusty, squeaky springs.
Still Smells of Urine After Cleaning?
If the mattress still smells of urine after 2–3 rounds of the steps above, especially on rainy days, residue is almost certainly sitting in the core. You can try an enzyme cleaner made for urine odor; read the instructions and test a hidden spot first. For buildup from repeated accidents, though, extraction cleaning is more effective at pulling residue out of the core. Mattresses smell more easily in the rainy season too; read why mattresses smell during the rainy season in HCMC.

When to Call a Professional
DIY works when it's a single accident and you catch it early. It's time to call a professional if any of these apply:
- ✓Your child has had several accidents in the same spot
- ✓The urine smell remains or comes back after 2–3 DIY attempts
- ✓There's already a yellow mark with a darker ring from old urine
- ✓Urine has soaked through the cover into the foam or latex core
- ✓The cover is sewn on and can't be removed for washing
- ✓You want the whole mattress cleaned, not just one spot
How Thuan High Clean Handles Urine on Mattresses
When we arrive, our technician checks the mattress type, label and the affected area before starting. The urine spot is treated with a solution suited to the material, then an extraction machine pulls residue out of both the surface and the core below. On foam and memory foam we use a low-moisture setting and no steam. If you like, you can add hot-steam sanitizing and deodorizing for mattresses that can take it, once the residue has been removed.
We're also upfront about the limits: urine odor and stains usually improve noticeably, but yellow marks left for months may only fade rather than disappear. Mattress cleaning at home costs 300,000 VND for mattresses under 1.0 m wide, 350,000 VND for 1.2–1.4 m, 400,000 VND for 1.6–1.8 m and 450,000–500,000 VND for 2.0–2.2 m, plus 100,000 VND for hot-steam sanitizing and deodorizing. The final price depends on the material and its condition; send photos on WhatsApp or Zalo at +84 357 111 566 for an accurate quote before we start. How to Protect the Mattress While Your Child Is Still Bedwetting
- ✓Use a breathable waterproof mattress protector that covers the whole top
- ✓Keep a spare set of sheets and a protector ready for a quick change at night
- ✓Keep dry towels near the bed so you can blot right away
- ✓Choose a zippered mattress cover that can be removed and washed
- ✓Air out the room and vacuum the mattress once a month
With young children at home, a deep mattress clean every 3–6 months helps keep odor and residue from building up.
