How Do You Clean a Felt Sofa Without Leaving Water Marks?
Yes, you can clean a felt sofa at home, as long as you use very little water, treat the whole panel evenly and dry it fast. Water marks usually form when moisture soaks into the foam and dries from the outside in. Pilling comes from hard scrubbing or stiff brushes on the short felt fibers. Before you start, check the W, S, WS or X code on the care tag.
If you're not sure what those codes mean, see our guide to sofa cleaning codes W, S, WS and X. In how often you should clean your sofa, we explained that felt holds onto dust and odors, so it needs weekly vacuuming and regular deep cleaning. This guide covers the next question: how to actually clean it the right way.
In this article, Thuan High Clean explains why felt gets water rings and pilling, which method fits each tag code, six steps to clean it yourself and how to fix marks that are already there. At the end, you'll find the signs that it's time to call a professional.
Quick Summary
- Check the tag first: W and WS allow water-based cleaners; S means solvent only; X means vacuum only.
- Vacuum thoroughly in the direction of the nap before any cleaning.
- Use foam, never pour water, and wring the cloth almost dry.
- Clean the whole panel from seam to seam so no edge line forms.
- Dry it fast with a fan, then brush the nap once the fabric is dry.

Why Do Felt Sofas Get Water Marks and Pilling?
Felt is a dense fabric with a short, soft nap. That nap makes the sofa feel warm and cozy, but it also holds water and is easy to damage by rubbing. When our technicians inspect felt sofas damaged by DIY cleaning, they usually find one of these three causes.
Water Soaks Into the Foam and Pulls Dirt to the Edges
When you pour water or use a soaking-wet cloth, the water passes through the felt into the foam underneath. As it dries from the outside in, it carries dust, soap residue and dirt to the edge of the wet area. The result is a dark ring that often looks worse than the original stain.
Humid Air in Ho Chi Minh City Slows Drying
Saigon's rainy season runs roughly from May to November, and closed-up apartments stay humid all year. In that air, a damp sofa dries very slowly. The longer the fabric stays wet, the more time dirt has to migrate into a ring, and foam that stays damp can start to smell or grow mold.
Hard Scrubbing Breaks and Tangles the Fibers
Felt fibers are short and fine. Scrubbing with a stiff brush or a kitchen sponge pulls them loose and twists them into small pills. It also flattens the nap in a different direction, so the scrubbed spot looks shiny or darker than the rest even when it's clean.
Use the Care Tag to Choose How to Clean Your Felt Sofa
The tag is usually under a seat cushion, on the underside of the frame or near the cushion zipper. Its code tells you which cleaners are safe for the fabric. Here's how each code applies to a felt sofa.
| Tag Code | Allowed | How to Clean Felt |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaner | Use foam from a diluted cleaner, a well-wrung cloth and fast drying. |
| WS / SW | Water-based or solvent | Start with water-based foam; use an upholstery solvent for oily spots. |
| S | Solvent only | No water. Dab with a dry-cleaning solvent and test a hidden spot first. |
| X | Vacuum and light brushing only | No cleaners at all. Have a professional look at any stain in person. |
| No tag | Unknown | Vacuum, test a little foam in a hidden spot; stop if color or size changes. |
Many locally made felt sofas in Vietnam have no tag at all. In that case, treat the fabric as delicate: use as little moisture as possible and always test on the back of the sofa or under a cushion first.
How to Clean a Felt Sofa at Home in 6 Steps
These steps are for felt sofas coded W or WS. For an S code, do steps 1 and 6, and dab with solvent instead of foam in step 3. For an X code, do only steps 1 and 6.
Step 1: Vacuum Thoroughly With the Nap
Use a soft brush attachment and vacuum the seats, back, arms and every crevice. Work in one direction with the nap instead of pushing back and forth hard. Any dust left behind turns into mud once it gets wet, and that's the main source of water rings.
Step 2: Test Your Cleaner in a Hidden Spot
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap or an upholstery cleaner into cool water. Dab a little on the back of the sofa or under a cushion, let it dry, then check. If the color fades, the fabric stiffens or the nap mats down, don't use that cleaner.
Step 3: Clean With Foam, Not Water
Whisk the solution until it foams and put only the foam on a well-wrung microfiber cloth. Wipe gently with the nap, never in circles. On a stain, press and lift the cloth repeatedly instead of rubbing. Never spray or pour water directly onto felt.
Step 4: Treat the Whole Panel to Avoid Edge Lines
This is the step that prevents water marks. Instead of cleaning only the stain, dampen the entire panel evenly from one seam to the next. When the whole panel dries at the same time, there's no wet edge for dirt to collect along.
Step 5: Blot and Dry It Fast
Press a clean, dry towel firmly onto the fabric to pull out moisture, switching towels as they get damp. Then point a fan straight at the sofa and open the windows, or run the air conditioner to pull humidity out of the room. Don't sit on the sofa until both the fabric and the foam are fully dry.
Step 6: Brush the Nap Once It's Dry
Once the fabric is dry, brush it lightly in one direction with a soft brush to lift the nap. This evens out the color and removes shiny or flattened patches. Finish with one light pass of the vacuum.
Important
- Don't use a hot hair dryer or an iron on felt; heat can shrink the fibers and make them shiny.
- Don't dry cushions in strong sun, because felt fades unevenly.
- Don't put removable covers in the washing machine unless the tag says so; they may shrink and no longer fit.
What If Your Felt Sofa Already Has Water Marks or Pilling?
Fixing Water Marks on Felt
On a W or WS sofa, a fresh water ring can usually be faded by repeating steps 3 to 5 across the whole panel, not just the ring itself. If the mark is old or spreads across a large area, the residue has usually soaked into the foam. Surface wiping rarely clears it at that point; it takes an extraction machine to pull the dirty water out of the foam.
Fixing Pilling and Matted Felt
Small pills can be removed with a fabric shaver (lint shaver), moved lightly over the surface without pressing. Work in small sections and stop once the surface is smooth. Cleaning can't repair fabric that has worn thin or frayed; at that point, reupholstering is the only real fix.
Common Mistakes When Cleaning a Felt Sofa Yourself
- Spraying water or cleaner straight onto a stain and letting it air-dry.
- Cleaning only the stain and leaving a wet patch with a sharp edge.
- Scrubbing in circles with a stiff brush or kitchen sponge.
- Using bleach, concentrated laundry detergent or too much soap.
- Sitting on the sofa or covering it while the foam is still damp.

When Should You Call a Professional?
DIY cleaning works well for surface dust and small, fresh stains. It's better to call a professional if any of these apply:
- ✓Your sofa is coded S or X but has a large stain that needs cleaning.
- ✓Water marks are old or cover several panels.
- ✓Water, a drink or urine has soaked into the foam.
- ✓The sofa smells damp or sour even though the fabric looks clean.
- ✓The whole sofa hasn't been cleaned in a long time and looks dull all over.
Thuan High Clean offers sofa cleaning at your home with an extraction machine: the solution is sprayed and immediately vacuumed back out, so dirty water doesn't sit in the foam. Send us a photo of the care tag first so we can choose the right method for your felt. Old water marks or stains may only fade rather than disappear completely.
