Does Sofa Cleaning Fade or Shrink the Fabric?
Can sofa cleaning fade or shrink the fabric? For most fabric sofas, the risk is low when the technician picks the right method and tests a hidden spot first. The risk is real in some cases: dyes that aren't colorfast, natural fibers, water-sensitive fabrics, or cushion covers removed and washed the wrong way. Nobody should promise you that the color can't change at all.
This guide helps you work out whether your sofa needs extra care, how technicians check it and what to ask before booking. If you're planning to clean it yourself, common mistakes are covered in our guide to apartment sofa cleaning.

Which Fabrics Are Most Likely to Fade or Shrink?
The risk depends on the fiber, the dye and how the cover is made. Treat this table as a guide, since two sofas sold under the same fabric name can still react differently.
| Fabric | Common Risk | Level of Care |
|---|---|---|
| Standard polyester, microfiber | Usually colorfast with little shrinkage; can leave marks if cleaned unevenly | Low to medium |
| Cotton, linen | Can shrink when very wet, may wrinkle or lighten | Higher |
| Velvet, chenille | Pile can flatten or mark, so color looks patchy even if it hasn't faded | Higher |
| Viscose, rayon, silk blends | Very water-sensitive; can mark, shrink or lose their sheen | High |
| Dark colors: red, navy, black | Dye may bleed, especially on fabric never cleaned before | Test carefully |
| Fabric coded S or X on the tag | Not suited to water or to wet cleaning at all | High; we may decline |
The tag code is the first thing to check, and our guide to sofa cleaning codes W, S, WS and X explains each one. Leather has different risks, like drying, cracking or peeling, so it isn't in this table.
Why a Sofa Can Look a Different Color After Cleaning
A color change doesn't always mean fading. Technicians usually run into one of three situations after cleaning, and each means something different.
Dirt Comes Off and the Original Color Shows
Over time, dust and body oils dull a sofa fairly evenly. After cleaning, the most-used spots may look brighter or stand out from the rest. That usually isn't fading, but it can make the sofa look different.
Sun Damage That Was Already There
A sofa near a window can fade on one side, especially in sunny Ho Chi Minh City apartments. Dirt can hide this, so the faded area only becomes obvious after cleaning. Cleaning can't bring back color lost to the sun.
The Dye Really Has Bled or Marked
This is the real risk, usually caused by unstable dye, the wrong solution or too much water. It's also why the hidden-spot test shouldn't be skipped.
Why Sofa Fabric Shrinks
Shrinkage most often happens when cushion covers are taken off and machine-washed, soaked or tumble-dried. Even slight shrinkage can stop a cover fitting its cushion or make it very hard to zip. That's why Thuan High Clean cleans covers on the cushion rather than removing them.
Natural and water-sensitive fabrics can also shrink or wrinkle if they get too wet or dry too slowly. Controlling the water and extracting it thoroughly reduces that risk. After cleaning, a sofa needs about 1–2 hours to dry.
How Technicians Test the Fabric Before Cleaning
The test happens before the full clean. The whole process is in our sofa cleaning process guide; these are just the color and fabric checks:
- Check the tag, the fabric type and any existing faded or marked areas.
- Pick a hidden spot, like the back of the sofa or under a seat cushion.
- Test the solution there, blotting with a clean white cloth to see if color transfers.
- Check once dry for marks, color changes or changes in texture.
- Tell you the result, then choose the method, reduce moisture, or advise against cleaning.

A passed test doesn't mean zero risk
Testing reduces risk but doesn't eliminate it. The test spot can react differently from areas with sun damage, chemical contact or earlier home cleaning.
What Thuan High Clean Tells You Before Starting
If your sofa is in a higher-risk group, you should hear about it before cleaning, not after. Thuan High Clean tells you up front:
- ✓What group the fabric falls into and the specific risks.
- ✓Any existing fading, marks or damage, so we both know.
- ✓The planned method and price, before we start.
- ✓Which stains may not come out completely.
- ✓When it's better not to clean at all, rather than taking the job anyway.
You may be worried because a home clean left marks or the smell stayed. The odor side of that is covered in why a sofa still smells after cleaning.
If your sofa is in one of these groups, send photos of the tag and fabric on WhatsApp or Zalo at +84 357 111 566 and Thuan High Clean will take a look and quote first.
