Bed Bugs in Your Mattress: Signs and What to Do at Home

Think you have bed bugs in your mattress? How to spot them, where they hide, what you can do at home, what cleaning can and can't do, and when to call pest control.

How Do You Know You Have Bed Bugs in Your Mattress?

The only reliable way to know there are bed bugs in your mattress is to find the bugs or their traces: tiny dark spots, shed skins and eggs along the seams, and small blood marks on the sheets. Itchy skin alone isn't enough to tell. Mattress cleaning removes the traces and reduces bugs on the surface, but it can't replace pest control once they're living in the bed frame and walls too.

How hot steam helps reduce bacteria and dust mites is covered in does hot steam kill bacteria. This guide is only about bed bugs in mattresses: spotting them, where they hide, what you can do yourself and the limits of cleaning.

Signs of Bed Bugs in a Mattress

Adult bed bugs are flat, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed. Young bugs and eggs are smaller and paler, so they're harder to see. Use a flashlight along the seams and corners when you check. This table helps tell them apart from look-alikes:

SignWhat It Looks LikeEasy to Confuse With
Fecal spotsTiny black dots like marker ink that smear when wiped dampMold spots (usually in patches, with a musty smell)
Blood on sheetsSmall reddish-brown dots or streaksSwatted mosquitoes or scratches
Shed skins, eggsEmpty yellow-brown shells; tiny white eggs in clustersLint or fabric fluff
The bugsFlat, reddish-brown, slow, hide from the flashlightFleas (they jump), baby cockroaches (they run fast)
OdorA sharp, sweetish smell when there are manyMusty or sweaty smells

Itching and rashes linked to dust mites are often mistaken for bed bugs.

A note on health

Don't assume bed bugs from itchy bites alone, since many things cause similar rashes. If bites swell, spread or a young child has many of them, see a doctor.

Where Bed Bugs Hide in and Around the Bed

Bed bugs hide in narrow, dark gaps close to where you sleep during the day and come out to feed at night. Check in order, working outward from the mattress.

Seams, Piping and Labels

This is where bed bugs turn up most. Fold back the piping and check the folds, corners, the zipper of the mattress cover and the back of the label. Clusters of black dots along the seam are a reliable sign.

The Underside and the Bed Frame

Flip the mattress to check underneath, then inspect the slats, joints, screw holes and the underside of the platform. Wooden beds with many joints are ideal hiding spots, and this is the part mattress cleaning can't reach.

Headboard, Wall Cracks and Outlets

As numbers grow, bed bugs spread behind the headboard, into baseboard gaps, wallpaper edges, outlets and nightstands. Finding signs here means the problem has gone beyond the mattress.

How Bed Bugs Get Into Your Home

Bed bugs don't come because a home is dirty; they hitch a ride on belongings and people. In Ho Chi Minh City, the usual routes are:

  • ✓Suitcases and backpacks after staying in hotels, guesthouses or sleeper buses.
  • ✓Secondhand mattresses, beds or sofas, bought or given.
  • ✓Rental apartments and rooms with frequent tenant turnover.
  • ✓Spreading from a neighboring unit through wall gaps and service shafts in apartment buildings and boarding houses.

Dealing With Bed Bugs at Home: What You Can Do

These steps cut numbers and limit the spread while you arrange a proper treatment. If the problem is small and recent, doing them thoroughly may be enough; if not, see when to call pest control below.

Step 1: Keep It Contained

Don't move to another room or drag the mattress into the living room; the bugs will follow you and your things. Pull the bed a few centimeters away from the wall and keep sheets and blankets off the floor.

Step 2: Wash Bedding Hot

Bag the sheets, pillowcases, blankets and removable mattress cover in the room, then wash them at the hottest setting the fabric allows and tumble-dry on high. Keep anything you can't wash sealed in a bag until it can be treated.

Step 3: Vacuum Every Seam

Use a narrow nozzle and go slowly along the seams, corners, bed joints and baseboards. Afterward, seal the vacuum bag or canister contents in a tied plastic bag and take it outside right away.

Step 4: Encase the Mattress

A fully sealed, bed-bug-proof zippered encasement traps any bugs left inside and makes the surface easier to inspect. Keep it on continuously for a long period rather than taking it off partway through.

Don't

Don't spray household insecticide on the mattress, pillows or anywhere you sleep, and never use gasoline, kerosene or alcohol to "burn" the bugs. These are dangerous to whoever sleeps there and a real fire risk.

When to Call a Pest Control Company

  • ✓You find signs in the bed frame, headboard, wall cracks or outlets, not just on the mattress.
  • ✓People in several rooms are getting bitten, or there are fecal spots in more than one room.
  • ✓You've followed the home steps for a few weeks and still find new bugs.
  • ✓You live in an apartment or boarding house and the neighbors have bed bugs too.

If the mattress is torn in several places so bugs can get into the core, or it's already old and sagging, it may be time to replace it. See our guide on whether to clean your mattress or buy a new one. Keep any new mattress in a bed-bug-proof encasement until you're sure the home is clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not necessarily. A single bug may have just arrived in a suitcase or on secondhand furniture. Check the mattress and bed frame thoroughly and keep watching; if you find more bugs, eggs or fecal spots, they're likely breeding in your home.
Yes. Bed bugs don't eat mattress materials; they hide in gaps, seams and cover zippers, so any mattress can have them. Mattresses with few seams and a sealed encasement are easier to inspect and treat.
Usually not. Bed bugs can survive a long time without feeding, so leaving the room empty isn't a way to get rid of them. It also makes it easy to carry them into other rooms.
Not necessarily. If the bed frame and bedroom aren't treated, a new mattress will get bed bugs too. If you do get rid of the old one, wrap it up and label it as having bed bugs so nobody takes it home.
